Funeral Notice or Obituary? Words MATTER. Women's Suffrage Centennial

With the rising death toll from Covid-19, reading Funeral Notices has become a regular occurrence.

August is always a month of mixed emotions for me. There are several August Birthdays in my family. It is also a time of great Heart-ache.

Tomorrow, August 12 it will be eight years since my Mom died of Metastatic Lung Cancer. Even with the passing years, it never gets any easier.

I've been writing about what it was like to watch her learn how to "Read Between the Lines." It was beyond sad to watch her epiphany with the realization of how un-kind the English Language is to WOMEN.

The implicit Bias of words like OBITUARY are insulting.

I would like to see the Death Care Industry, & quite frankly the Media start using the more Emotionally Intelligent term FUNERAL NOTICE.

Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment would protect Women from both Explicit Hate Speech we hear in Music Lyrics & the Implicit Bias of subtle MISOGYNY of words like OBITUARY.

More tomorrow
